Sam is a Chinese man who dresses like an American cowboy, speaks flawless English, and often wanders through America on Google Street View. He was once my lover. He longed for American culture, yet refused to go in person, because he knew it was just a fantasy he had invented for himself.

I now live in New York. I interweave the street scenes I film in my daily life, Google Street View images, and footage found through online searches, weaving them into a film constructed through the overlapping gazes between us. The voiceover comes from the letters Sam and I exchanged in English, combined with fragments of my daily life in New York. I used Sam’s English recordings to generate an AI voiceover. From Nowhere to Nowhere is an unseen homeland, and a distant wonderland. Sam’s cultural life is detached from lived memory, and the self keeps shuttling between two “nowheres.” 

This 2024 version was made during my first summer in New York. The film is still in progress, a new chapter will be added every two years, without a fixed endpoint.
